There are many garden type pests that you have to learn how to get rid of when trying to grow your plants. One very common pest are called whiteflies. These can quickly become a very serious problem if you aren't careful due to the fact that the will show up at your garden in very large numbers and reproduce quickly.

There is considerable damage that this garden pest does. Their young are the ones that will damage your plants when they are growing ruining your efforts. As they are developing they will start feeding on your plants sucking the sap out of them. This will kill the leaves and eventually the entire plant. Another huge problem with them are the fact that these flies excrete honeydew which attracts other types of pests like ants to your garden.

You have to watch out for citrus whiteflies as well as greenhouse ones. Despite the name the citrus variety will eat almost any type of plant and not just citrus fruit. If you are in a greenhouse, you will most likely see problems with this type of fly.

The first way of controlling this problem are to use the traps. You can get traps specifically for a whitefly problem. These are the sticky glue traps types. Some have pheromones that attract the males while others are a certain color to get the fly to land on them. When this happens, the sticky glue is too powerful for the fly to get away. These can be placed around the garden easily.

Another common method of controlling this pest is to use what's call insecticidal soap. For those concerned about using natural methods this can be purchased as an organic product. This is mostly a mixture of soap, water, and natural oil. It will coat you plants and the flies. It will be hard for them to breathe and move in.
